Waitohi Ferry Redevelopment Project Update

Week beginning  28 September

What’s happening this week?

Marine works

This week, crews are installing structural steel for the springline dolphin and continuing the piling for the long dolphin structures midway along the future Transition Berth. A custom-made floating piling gate, fabricated in Marlborough, helps improve efficiency by accurately positioning piles as they are installed for the new Transition Berth.

Temporary scaffolding and access routes are in place so Interislander staff can continue to safely access operational areas while this work is underway.

Piling also continues for the Transition Berth linkspan bridge and deck build.
The Transition Berth will provide temporary infrastructure for the existing Interislander ferries while the permanent wharf is built. This will help maintain ferry services and minimise disruption during the redevelopment.

Landside work

In the No. 2 Long Arm construction zone, concrete is continuing to be removed from the former dolphin structures. The concrete has been cut into smaller sections so it can be safely transported off site for recycling.

Crews are also preparing for piling by using an excavator from the land to clear material from the planned pile locations. This will help ensure the piles can be installed safely and accurately.

Construction traffic will continue to access the work sites via the Waitohi Domain access bridge. Lagoon Road will only be used for oversized deliveries, including the 36-metre pile casings.

HEB Site Office Works

HEB’s temporary site office beside the Edwin Fox Museum is taking shape, with the walls, and roof due to be completed this week. Crane lifts and deliveries will continue, and short footpath closures may be needed at times. Pedestrian diversions will be clearly marked, so please follow site signage and directions from the site team.

Weekend Work

To help maintain progress on key project activities, some construction work may occur on Sundays over the coming weeks. These activities will be coordinated around ferry operations and carried out in accordance with project consent requirements and applicable construction noise limits. If you’re around the Waitohi Picton foreshore or town, you may notice activity associated with marine investigations, material deliveries and other project works.
