MEDIA RELEASE Port Marlborough and New Zealand King Salmon enter long-term partnership with storage logistics contract and Westshore warehouse build Port Marlborough has entered a long-term service contract with New Zealand King Salmon (NZKS), taking on responsibility for storage logistics of fish feed used across NZKS’s Marlborough operations, and the construction of a new warehouse on Westshore. The agreement streamlines the supply chain by relocating feed storage to Picton, placing product closer to NZKS’s farms. This will reduce road freight movements for feed by more than 90 percent, lowering transport costs and cutting associated emissions. For NZKS, the benefits are immediate, feed is closer to their farms and available when needed. For Port Marlborough, it is another opportunity to align infrastructure development and management with the evolving needs of customers. Construction is underway on a purpose-built 3,200sqm quayside warehouse at Port Marlborough’s Westshore site. Part of the new warehouse will also be home to Waikawa Fishing Company, a proudly local and Māori-owned business pioneering New Zealand’s deep-sea crab industry. Their work is breaking new ground in sustainable harvesting, live export logistics, and market development, positioning Aotearoa as a global leader in high-quality, responsibly sourced deep-sea seafood. Port Marlborough Chief Executive, Rhys Welbourn, said the warehouse build demonstrates the port’s customer-led approach and commitment to sustainable infrastructure development. “Our focus is on building strong partnerships that create value for customers, the community, and the region. This project delivers efficiency gains, reduces emissions, and supports industries that are central to Marlborough’s economy. It also reflects our wider strategy of investing in infrastructure that is fit for the future,” he said. NZKS Chief Executive, Carl Carrington, said the partnership supports both operational resilience and environmental outcomes. “Working with Port Marlborough is a positive partnership that supports the future resilience of our operations in the region.” “Having our feed logistics near our farms streamlines our operations and supports on-road truck reductions. This is great for Marlborough and helps to minimise our environmental footprint, which is a core part of our company’s values.” he said. In line with its strategies around partnerships and prosperity, Port Marlborough has engaged a Marlborough contractor to build the warehouse, supported by local subcontractors. The project is also being used as a trial for future capital works to record Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions associated with construction. Emissions from fuel and electricity use will be measured, and ambitious waste diversion targets were set for the demolition of existing warehouses. More than 80 percent of demolition material, including concrete, brick, steel and roof sheeting, was recycled locally, a win for the project, the environment, and the local economy. With the Government’s New Zealand Aquaculture Development Plan targeting $3 billion in value by 2035, the Port Marlborough and NZKS partnership highlights how Marlborough’s industries are preparing to play an important part in the future of New Zealand’s sustainable seafood sector. # Ends # About Port Marlborough Port Marlborough is a key maritime gateway for Te Tau Ihu, facilitating the SH1 inter-island link, and movement of South Island trade, providing critical logistics, marine, port, and marina services.
