Waitohi Wharf Induction

Please take the time to read this information carefully as it outlines essential safety and operational requirements for all users accessing Waitohi Wharf.

Understanding and following these rules are critical to maintaining a safe working environment, preventing accidents, and ensuring smooth operations on the wharf.

General Rules

• All users (including visitors) must be fully inducted into the Port and have completed the Waitohi Wharf induction module
• High visibility clothing (to comply with AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 – Class Day/Night), safety footwear, hard hat and personal flotation device (PFD) are mandatory PPE for anyone working on the wharf.
• Pedestrians must only use designated and marked pathways located on the eastern side of the wharf.
• No vehicle, mobile plant, or pedestrian may pass under ship lines at any time.
• Storage of heavy equipment/materials/skip bins requires prior approval.
• Skip bins are for general vessel rubbish only.
• Gates located on the eastern side of the wharf are strictly controlled and may only be moved by Port Marlborough New Zealand (PMNZ) or StraitNZ (SNZ) personnel.
• Gates located on the western side of Waitohi Wharf, defining designated work areas, may be adjusted to suit operational needs with prior approval.

Vehicle Requirements

• All vehicles must obey the posted speed limit of 10 km/h.
• Vehicles and plant must adhere to Traffic Management Plans (TMPs).
• All vehicles entering the wharf must: 
  • be equipped with an amber beacon, mounted in a clearly visible location.
  • activate their beacon before entering the wharf and it must remain active for the entire time that vehicles are on the wharf until they exit.
• Vehicle movement may continue uninterrupted during mooring operations. Vehicles are permitted to transition across Waitohi Wharf at all times.
• Vehicle parking is restricted to approved vehicles only.

Heavy Vehicles 

• Maximum of six truck and trailer units permitted on the wharf at any one time.
• Each PCBU is limited to two trucks on the wharf simultaneously.
• Vehicles/plant/materials must not obstruct the Mobile Plant and Vehicles (MPV) lane or pedestrian walkways.

Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) Responsibilities

• PCBU’s must establish a gated, designated work area for operational activities, including: 
  • Discharge
  • Loading
  • Material handling
  • Bunkering
  • Maintenance
• All PCBUs must ensure their operations are contained within their designated work areas at all times.
• PCBU’s must maintain a safe working environment and manage environmental risks.

Other suppliers require consent from Port Marlborough and the Harbourmaster.
