Waitohi Ferry Redevelopment Project Update

Week beginning  21 September

What’s happening this week?

Marine works

This week, crews are installing structural steel and piling for the long dolphin structures midway along the future Transition Berth. A custom-made floating piling gate, fabricated in Marlborough, is helping improve efficiency by accurately positioning piles as they are installed for the new Transition Berth.

Piling is also continuing for the landside bridge, which will connect to the future linkspan, and work has begun on the bridge deck abutment.

The floating piling gate (green structure) helps crews position piles safely and efficiently.

Rock bags are being placed along the shoreline to help protect it from erosion.

The Transition Berth will provide temporary infrastructure for the existing Interislander ferries while the permanent wharf is built. This will help maintain ferry services and minimise disruption during the redevelopment.

Temporary scaffolding and access arrangements are in place to provide safe access for Interislander operational staff while this work is underway

This week, crews are removing the existing dolphin piles and carrying out geotechnical investigations at No. 2 Long Arm. Divers will collect seabed samples to assess whether the material to be dredged is suitable for disposal as clean fill.

Piling and marine works continue at the future Transition Berth.

Landside works

In the No. 2 Long Arm construction zone, crews are removing redundant marine infrastructure and concrete. Some concrete-breaking work will take place, while navigational lights will remain operational.

All construction traffic now enters the work sites via the Waitohi Domain access bridge. Lagoon Road is used only for oversized deliveries, such as 36-metre pile casings.

A dedicated access bridge at Waitohi Domain enables construction traffic to reach the site while avoiding public roads

HEB Site Office Works

The main structure of HEB’s temporary site office beside the Edwin Fox Museum is now being built. Crane lifts, deliveries and occasional temporary footpath closures will occur during construction. Pedestrian diversions will be in place where required, so please follow site signage and directions from the site team.

Weekend Work

To help maintain progress on key project activities, some construction work may occur on Sundays over the coming weeks. These activities will be coordinated around ferry operations and carried out in accordance with project consent requirements and applicable construction noise limits. If you’re around the Waitohi Picton foreshore or town, you may notice activity associated with marine investigations, material deliveries and other project works
