Port Marlborough appoints Main Contractor for Waitohi Ferry Redevelopment Project Port Marlborough has appointed a Main Contractor to deliver the physical works construction for the Cook Strait Ferry Replacement Programme at Waitohi Picton. New Zealand-based HEB Construction will provide design review, estimating and logistics planning, ahead of delivering the construction of a new wharf, linkspan and passenger access walkway to support the Government-procured rail-enabled ferries arriving in 2029. The works will be delivered with a strong commitment to health and safety, environmental stewardship, and maintaining reliable port operations throughout construction, while minimising disruption to the local community. “This is a unique opportunity to be part of a major New Zealand infrastructure project that will stand and serve New Zealanders and visitors for decades to come,” says Port Marlborough CEO Rhys Welbourn. “As the project progresses, there will be a strong focus on delivering the works safely, responsible environmental stewardship, and maintaining efficient operations within a live port environment. Port Marlborough and project partners are committed to working collaboratively to deliver infrastructure that supports resilient interisland connections for future generations, while meeting the programme required for the new ferries to enter service in 2029.” Dan Chisnall, Project Director at HEB Construction, said the company looks forward to working alongside Port Marlborough and project partners to deliver the new ferry infrastructure at Waitohi Picton. “This is a complex and nationally significant project, and one that plays to HEB strengths in delivering large-scale infrastructure in challenging environments. We’ve assembled a high-quality team and are looking forward to working collaboratively with Port Marlborough, partners, and stakeholders to deliver a successful outcome for New Zealand.” HEB Construction is established and working on site at Port Marlborough having obtained the early works tender to dismantle and remove the previous Interislander Vehicle Access Bridge and Linkspan. These enabling works are now completed. Ends
