Cruise Industry Returns to Marlborough

Port Marlborough published the schedule today for Cruise Ships calling at Picton for the 2022 – 2023 summer season.

The recent announcement to fully reopen NZ borders paved the way for a long-awaited return of cruise to the region, after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus. Port Marlborough has been working with the cruise industry and regional partners behind the scenes to bring cruise back to Marlborough with a focus on sustainability.

Port Marlborough supports the cruise industry in Marlborough through the provision of berthage, marine and logistical services in the port. The shipping and marine teams manage the logistics of every cruise call, including ships’ pilotage through the Marlborough Sounds and berthing, passenger disembarkation, and working with shipping agents, tourism businesses, New Zealand Customs Service, the Ministry for Primary Industries and other agencies to ensure each visit goes smoothly.

Port Marlborough CEO Rhys Welbourn said:

“The 2020 season prior to the pandemic saw the cruise industry bring an additional $29 million spend to the Marlborough economy.

For us, though, the sustainable return of cruise to the region is not just about the economic benefits, but also about balancing environmental and community needs.

The cruise industry is committed to meeting the highest international maritime environmental standards, including MARPOL VI standards for air emissions. The reintroduction of cruise will also be a much-needed boost for local hospitality and tourism businesses, which has a flow-on effect for the whole community.”
