May 2007 WAIKAWA BAY MOORINGS UNDER REVIEW
Port Marlborough has lodged an objection to all current resource consent applications for moorings in Waikawa Bay as a precautionary step to protect the company’s long-term strategic interests in the marina zone. Alternative mooring sites and more efficient mooring configurations for those affected by the objection are currently being investigated to find the best solution for all parties. The existing moorings have been established on a largely unplanned basis and it has become apparent that there is a need for comprehensive reassessment of the needs of boat owners alongside the demands of port and marina infrastructure. Development plans for the Waikawa marina basin, including potential extension of the existing marina, are still at a preliminary stage and although likely to be many years from development, it is prudent for the company to take the necessary steps to protect its long-term interests. As part of the development planning process we are exploring long-term solutions that rationalise all moorings in areas of port activity. Issues such as safety and efficient use of water space are key considerations. This exploration includes researching alternatives to standard swing moorings e.g. pile moorings laid out in a grid pattern. Such alternatives may also provide a solution for moorings located throughout the Marlborough Sounds.
